Summer Newsletter

Staff Updates

We are in the process of recruiting new staff that we hope will be finalised in the next few weeks.  Following recruitment there is always a period of induction and training to help everyone settle in and understand the processes.  We will provide further information in our next newsletter.

Doddlespool care Home

We are now providing the GP care for Doddlespool residential home near Betley.

This involved one GP session a week as well as nursing support.

NHS App

We have noticed that having had a great improvement in the dispensary answerphone the numbers have increased again.  This takes up an significant amount of staff time.

In addition, you can book appointments (pre-bookable and on the day) and if you have your notifications switched on then results are sent directly to you.

For patients that are new to us we have been sending the reminders about the App for ordering in particular but you may not be aware how much safer it is to order your prescriptions online as it links directly to your NHS records minimising any human error, incorrect orders and the challenges we have with poor phone lines and trying to hear what is being said.

In short this is a fantastic function that is easy to use.

If you are having any problems setting things up you are very welcome to contact us.

Easy FundRaising (easyfundraising.org.uk)

In last years Patient Fund income there was around £70 income from easy fundraising, over the years £1069), this was from a small number of contributors over the year – from online ordering.

If you don’t already support another cause please consider looking at this and Madeley Practice patients Fund, registering and signing up (if you have the notifications it reminds you if you are browsing that the company donates to easy fundraising).  It really does cost you absolutely nothing other than your initial time and  even if you choose another cause it is worth considering.

Madeley Practice Patient Satisfaction Survey 2026

The Practice has recently had an increase from around 7400 to 9000 patients following the closure of a local practice.  This has led to an increase in demand for services and we wre keen to understand how this has impacted on our service provision and the problems patients may be experiencing.

Responses:

Thank you to everyone who managed to complete this for us (75 responses) over the 35 days it was active.  This is comparable to the national NHS questionnaire that had 92 responses over last years questionnaire.

Results:

The results showed an overall great satisfaction with the surgery with increasing awareness of the App, online services and self referral options.

The main theme of the negative comments were: problems with the App, personal interactions and being able to get an appointment.  The appointment comments related mostly to GP appointments.

Action Plan

Contacting the Practice and getting the appropriate appointment.
We will continue to:

  • promote the NHS App as a way of booking on line
  • make Dr pre-bookable appointments available on line (on the day available from 8am
  • increase the use of the nurse pre-bookables using a booking link to help ensure appropriate appointments are booked.

We will continue to promote care navigation as people are not always aware of change in services.

Self-Referral Services:
We will continue to promote these access points. The updated self-referral numbers will continue to be put in the quarterly newsletter. In addition, they are now pinned to the top of the Facebook page and they are available on the website as well.

Comments about individual Teams:
The PSQ is discussed at all team meetings. We are in the process of expanding our workforce and reviewing our operating procedures.

GP Appointments:
We have appointed a new salaried GP. Current resident (training GPs) continues to gain experience that reduces the supervision commitment of the Training GPs and improves access. Continue to Care Navigate and promote appropriate services.

Ways patients can help GP access for all

If you are not sure how best to deal with a problem (this can be clinical, medication related, administrative or various other issues) please speak with reception.  If you are having problems getting what you need please talk to us.

Consider (for example) using the NHS App for ordering prescriptions, sick note repeats, checking your medical history (patients sometimes book appointments for this when completing insurance applications), GP appointments that you might have booked and your results.

Refresh your awareness of the self help referrals.  Whilst the counselling, maternity, physio, NHS health checks, smoking cessation, alcohol/drug and all age mental health services have been available for self referral for some time the main new service this year has been the ability to self refer to the musculoskeletal team without the need for a GP appointment.  These numbers are printed in the newsletter and are on the facebook page and website.

In addition to this pharmacy services are now able to prescribe in certain conditions and many more medications are available over the counter rather than on prescription.  If you are going on holiday and are wanting medication to stop a period this is available privately through the chemist or online, there is no need for any GP contact.  Contraceptive reviews and provision are available through the chemist with no need for GP contact.

Summary

Overall, whilst we recognise there are always improvements to be made, we were pleased with not only the formal results but the individual comments of positive feedback over the last few months.

This reflects how all of the staff have worked hard to try and ensure new patients feel welcome whilst maintaining the high level of service that we strive to deliver.

There are concerns that by increasing the appointments for online booking, GP appointments will be booked for issues that are not best dealt within a GP appointment and we would encourage everyone to consider their appointment need to help access.  We see this already and whilst it is always nice to catch up it is rather a luxury that impacts on the access for more clinically focused problems.

As the NHS continues to evolve it is important that we all adapt, this is not about compromising care, more about making things more accessible and releasing capacity where we are able such that we are offering as much patient centred care as we possibly can with the help of all of the primary care providers.

Madeley Practice Patients’ Fund and Participation Group

The Patients Fund Committee is pleased to write that, over the winter/spring period, a number of donations have been received.  After discussion with the doctors/nursing staff, the committee has agreed to purchase a second “coagucheck” (or INR) device which is used to measure blood clotting for those on warfarin.

A request to purchase two, height adjustable couches for use at Madeley has been agreed – making access easier for the less mobile. Finally, a medical grade cooler bag, to hold vaccines, is being purchased.  This will be of great use to those requiring vaccinations to be carried out at home.

It is the generosity of patients which enables those items not provided by NHS to be bought, making YOUR experience easier and often more convenient.  Please, continue to think of the Patients Fund and what it does for YOU.
